Black History
Have you ever been a witness to history? In a certain moment, you experienced something so profound, so meaningful that it’s forever etched in your memory. It could be something you saw or heard, either way, it’s unforgettable.
Those moments don’t come around often. And in the field of music, they are even rarer. While so much of today’s music lacks originality and depth, there is a movement arising that’s making history … Black History. Black History is a federation of talented musicians based in the Washington, D.C. area.

The name Black History extends from a desire to make music so important and so poignant that it is regarded as Black history. The amalgamation of a concept brought to fruition by founding member Shun McGhee, Black History is indeed a super group.

At its core, Black History is a rap band—it is jazz, Latin jazz, funk and soul in instrumentation, and poetry in lyric. The band affectionately refers to this sub-genre of rap music as “griot soul.”
By merging socially-conscious lyrics with syncopated rhythms, the band teaches the masses while making them dance simultaneously.

Black History is not just a band, it’s a movement. It doesn’t just make music, it makes statements, bucks trends, and challenges the status quo. It seeks to raise the bar in sound and substance. Believing when audiences have the opportunity they will make intelligent choices, Black History refuses to “dumb down its music.” In musical influences, the group finds its home somewhere between Public Enemy and the band Chic. They never speak unless they have something to say. Contending its performances are truly an experience, band members always step on stage looking their best and encourage their audience to do the same.
