Black History

is a federation of talented musicians based in the Washington, D.C. area.

The name Black History extends from a desire to make music so important and so poignant that it is regarded as Black history. The amalgamation of a concept brought to fruition by rapper, guitarist, and founding member Shun McGhee, Black History is indeed a super group.

At its core, Black History is a rap band—it is jazz, Latin jazz, funk and soul in instrumentation, and poetry in lyric. Their songs hearken back to the West African tradition of storytelling, a rap sub-genre affectionately referred to as “griot soul.” All of the music is appropriate for adult and family audiences.

Contending its performances are truly an experience, merging socially-conscious lyrics with syncopated rhythms, the band teaches the masses while making them dance simultaneously. Prepare to ride the musical roller coaster, also known as Black History.
